Tata Steel - HIGHFIELD

Tata Steel

Tata Steel, based in the UK, in Port Talbot, came to us in May of 2020 after expressing a problem with one of their units and its components.

Once their gearbox had arrived we quickly got to work, as you will see, investigating the problem and applying our relevant gearbox services to ensure operations could return to normal as quickly as possible for this giant corporation. As well as Tata Steel, we have had the pleasure of working with other businesses including Ardagh Glass, Warwick Chemicals and other, more well-known, brands such as Guinness and Ineos.

For more information about our industrial gearbox repair service, or to learn more about how we can fix gearboxes that are manufactured by any number of notable brands, be sure to get in touch with us at Highfield Gears on 01484 531 010, or email us at sales@hgi-uk.co.uk. The Gearbox Problems We Faced

Upon inspection by our skilled engineers, we found that output couplings were twisted on the shaft which had, over time, caused a great deal of damage to them, the keys, and the shafts themselves. Once we had stripped the gearbox, and the second reduction pinion and wheel set, we found a 5/8" countersunk Whitworth and a 3/8" long part of a screw stuck in the housing, between the outside diameter of the bearing and in the inside diameter of the housing.

The gearbox repairs team then moved onto cleaning the gearcase. This showed that the drive end and non-drive end of the bearing houses were showing wear on the back face of the bearing diameter. On top of that, the output bearing was damaged, with the only solution that would work would be a full replacement.

The Industrial Gearbox Repair Solution We Used

After our specialists had consulted on the problem and assessed what needed to be done, they applied a range of industrial gearbox repair solutions to ensure each of the problems discovered were repaired to the standard Highfield Gears expect.

Firstly, the drive, and non-drive, end of the bearing housings were machined onto the back face of the bearing diameter. We then machined two liners and fitted those to the second reduction line.

We manufactured and fitted a completely new bearing housing, 17T input pinion shaft, 2nd Reduction 15T pinion and 1st Reduction 67T wheel. We also refitted the existing input coupling with new keys to improve power transmission and overall performance and supplied new bearings, seals and fasteners.

Once we had finished repairing the gear unit, we then tested the rebuilt gearbox to our incredibly high standard, to ensure everything was running smoothly, and that the gearbox could be used for its intended application.
