Flender Gearbox Repairs - Highfield Gears

Flender Gearbox Repairs

At Highfield Gears, we have been helping to repair, recondition or upgrade gear units for business across the country since we were founded in 1927. Operating out of our Huddersfield-based gear centre means we have seen it all, and this level of experience, providing gear unit solutions, has allowed us to work on gearboxes that have been made by other brands, including Flender and Flender-Graffenstaden. In addition to Flender products, we also have experience with a range of other gearbox brands including Hansen, Radicon, Sumitomo, David Brown and Renold.

For decades we have got up close to this brand of gear unit and have been able to provide bespoke solutions each and every time.

From manufacturing specific spur gears, Flender helicals or helical bevels, to stripping 18-tonne Flender products and completely transforming them, we have done it all.

So, if you have a Flender or Flender-Graffenstaden product that is in need of repair, get in touch with our team of experts today. We have worked with companies across the UK in places such as Sunderland, Wolverhampton and Nottingham, as well as across Europe so no matter where you are, we can help. Call us on 01484 531 010 today or email us at sales@hgi-uk.co.uk.

Our Work With Flender Products

As we mentioned, we have spent decades working with this brand of transmission units and are incredibly confident that, once you get in touch, our team can help you.

We know that downtime can have detrimental effects on a business and, when something goes wrong, you’re not interested in who is going to fix the gearbox, you just want someone to come in and quickly complete the necessary work so your Flender gearboxes, sometimes called Siemens-Flender, are back up and running in no time.

We understand what customers want when they get in touch and work hard to ensure they feel in the know and informed throughout the repair or reconditioning process. We do this by writing up reports, taking photographs and offering reasoning as to why we have chosen a particular solution. In our experience, customers love this level of involvement because it assures them their investment in our services is providing sufficient return.

This allows us to track progress, ensure the quality of the Flender parts we create are up to standard and gives us, and you, the assurances that your new working Flender transmission is up to the job.

10 Ways To Keep Your Flender Industrial Gears Working Smoothly

Undergo visual inspections

Walk around your gearbox and make visual inspections. You don’t have to be an expert in power transmission to spot a wide range of potential issues. From overheating to excessive vibrating, all this can be seen with the naked eye. Once spotted, you can budget in future maintenance costs, instead of suffering unplanned downtime.

Clean the gearbox

While it may seem odd, dust and dirt are real enemies of gear systems. Not only can they clog up industrial couplings and gears, but if left to build, they can present a fire hazard. It’s vital that downtime is planned to allow factory workers to get in there and ensure everything remains clean and free of dirt.

Keep it lubricated

A properly lubricated gearbox will run smoothly for years to come. Lubrication allows gears to transfer energy smoothly and keep any build-up of heat to a minimum. Make it a priority to lubricate your gearbox to the instructions laid out by the team at Flender. When carrying out this task, be sure to use the right products and measurements.

Take the temperature

Invest in an infrared gun to take the temperature of the Flender industrial gearbox that is housed in your factory. This will give you an immediate reading, and inform you of any heat-related issues that might have occurred. These will require immediate attention to prevent total gearbox failure.

Carry out vibration analysis

Often, the output speeds and environment that these units are in, are noisy. Therefore, it can be hard to listen to issues. Vibration analysis can tell you if there are issues that needed addressing, even in the noisiest of environments.

Inspect the gear components

Safely remove the inspection covers and observe the internal gears on a semi-regular basis. You should be looking for signs of pitting, in particular. Pitting is just a term used to describe corrosion on the gears and couplings. Small holes can appear and cause cracks within the gears, something that clearly should be avoided.

Check the breathers

Make sure that the breathers used are the correct ones. If they are, then ensure they are kept free of dirt and debris. This may seem hard to do in dusty environments but it’s all part of essential housekeeping that will go a long way to prevent unplanned downtime.

Use a dial indicator

As well as a heat gun, invest in a dial indicator to check for backlash and endplay. High backlash levels indicate gear tooth wear whereas increases in endplay suggest bearing or housing wear.

Refer to original specifications

Check gearbox ratings and make sure that the gearbox is performing to Flender’s original specifications. If it is going above and beyond its intended use, serious damage can be caused.
