Ardagh Glass - HIGHFIELD

Ardagh Glass

Ardagh Glass, part of Ardagh Group, are a Luxembourg-based business who came to Highfield Gears looking for help with the Voeller Gearbox.

As we'll explain in this case study, we underwent thorough inspections and our specialists implemented a bespoke gearbox repair service to ensure performance levels were back to the standard that Ardagh Glass expected. As well as this client, we've had the pleasure of working with several global brands and local UK businesses such as Tata Steel, and Warwick Chemicals to help fix their gear units with a solution that is appropriate for them.

If you’d like to learn more about how we can help you, be sure to get in touch with us on 01484 531 010 or email us at sales@hgi-uk.co.uk. We can help repair gearboxes from a range of notable brands and recondition, or upgrade, individual gear components such as bearings, gears and casings. Since 1927, we have been helping companies with their issues, offering recommendations and insights that meet their requirements. All this makes us confident that we can help you, no matter what your industrial gearbox issue is.

The Problem With The Gearbox Units

Before finding the right solution, we had to undergo an inspection to figure out what was wrong, and what steps we needed to take. Our findings showed us that one of the inputs had no drive and, after we had stripped it down, we found the splined shaft between the bevel wheel, and spur pinion on the secondary 'B' shaft, had sheared entirely from the spur gear. As a result, the taper roller bearing on the outer cover had collapsed entirely.

Within the gearcase itself, we found that the bores were within the accepted tolerance but the lube system in the gearcase required re-piping after failure. There were also flanged steel olives that required conversion to enots.

In general, there was damage to the bearings and seals, all of which would need replacing, and, there was only one coupling found on the free issue pinion, so our team had to manufacture a new one for the other pinion with a lock nut to suit.

The Gearbox Services We Used To Fix The Issue

It was clear, then, that the problems were plentiful and varied so, after informing the client of the issues and supplying photographs and detailed reports, we got to work, on-site, addressing the issues. We began by repiping the lube system and converting the olives to enots. We removed the 2 splined shafts and upgraded them with two new shafts as well as manufacturing and fitting new coupling flanges and locknuts for the hypoid spiral bevel pinion.

As with most clients, we also supplied and fitted brand new bearings, seals and fasteners to ensure a smooth power transmission once the gearbox had been reassembled and delivered back to Ardagh Glass’ site.
